The Dress

I got married in October 2015 and am selling my dress so it can make another bride as happy as it made me instead of being stuck in a box in the loft.

I went to a few shops looking for dresses and due to being self-conscious about my weight left the appointments horrified that I was going to be a plump bride. I had a rough image in my mind of what I wanted but had a list of a few things I thought I definitely didn’t want – one shouldered gown being one of them!

I went to a bridal shop in Sheffield (The Bridal House on Ecclesall Road) with my Mum and the friendliest lady greeted me at the door and made me feel very welcome and relaxed. I chose a few gowns to try on but quite quickly the lady said she had a dress in mind for me that she thought would really flatter my figure. When she brought it out I immediately dismissed it but after watching loads of bridal shows I wasn’t silly enough to not even try it on.

As I put the dress on and she started ‘doing me up’ I realised how skinny my waist looked and when the curtain opened my Mum’s face said it all. The flowers on the strap added enough drama to balance out the beautifully understated gown and the ruching to the side was SO flattering.

I usually wear size 20/22 UK trousers and size 18 tops but I do have a small waist for my figure and this dress made it look positively tiny.

I purchased the dress for £1050 and only had a few alterations made – I had the top let out by 1.5 inches just to give me a little less of a muffin top (!), a little bit off the length and had a loop added inside so that it could be bustled.

Thankfully I managed not to spill wine all over it on the day and remarkably it’s not even got make-up stains on it, though there are some very small grass / dirt stains on the very bottom but not visible when wearing it and nothing that I’m sure wouldn’t easily come out when dry cleaned.

The fabric is incredibly forgiving – I didn’t need to steam it on the morning after transporting it laid out in the car and my Mum managed to do it all up with the help of a crochet hook – no training needed.

If you want to see the designer photos of the dress I’d Google image Victoria Jane Sydney (I think that’s the design name as opposed to the number) and there are some photos with the model wearing it. I’ve put a few on with the listing trying to get the dress from different angles but am very self-conscious so apologies if there’s aren’t close-up enough!

With regard to shipping – I’ll pay for courier to anywhere in the UK.
